Marlborough vineyard contractor jailed

“Morris David Kennett, 44, told the court he had only tried to do right by his employees and that other contractors were only in business because of the low wages they paid their staff.

Yesterday in the Blenheim District Court Kennett was sentenced to eight months prison after admitting 17 personal charges of failing to pay tax and a further 17 of aiding and abetting the companies he ran.”

I frequently find that business owners are unaware that failure to pay PAYE constitutes tax evasion. This is one offence that the IRD takes very seriously. Even if you pay your PAYE late, this is still tax evasion. PAYE is treated in such a way because it is the crowns money held in trust by the business owner. It is akin to stealing from the state.

  1. Howard Says:

    “it’s the crowns money…”

Um. No it’s not. It’s the wage earner’s money, which the government has forcibly deprived him/her of.

This is just another instance of the old joke

don’t steal, the government doesn’t like competition.
